There has been widespread public dismay at the news that the Labour leadership contest still has 12 years left to run. The contest, which will select the person who party members deem will stand the best chance of losing general elections, started a number of decades ago, well before some of the candidates were born.
One of these people will be leading the Labour Party in 2027.
A party spokesperson said, “We believe in having a full and frank debate and if that means we need another dozen years to see this one through, then so be it. It doesn’t help that we’ve got Jeremy Corbyn in the race, he wants to discuss side issues like policy, rather than who’s got the nicest teeth.”
Because of the inconvenience of general elections being held every five years, the Labour Party has a number of leadership elections running concurrently. That means a contest started in the 1930s will soon end with the victor leading Labour into the 2020 General Election. George Lansbury is the favourite in that race.
